Alopecia, a battle I have faced, and endured for 21 years. A battle that controlled my life until I learned to control the it. You can have alopecia, but alopecia does not have you. The battles we face in life, often sweep in and take control of our minds, our thoughts, our emotions, and our self-esteem. We let whatever battle it may be become us, as if the battle were in control. What we need to realize is we can control our battles, they do not have to control us. We all experience our own battles, and alopecia is mine. If there is one thing I have learned from my journey, is alopecia may steal my hair, but it can not steal my beauty, nor can it steal my happiness. If anything alopecia makes us even more beautiful because it gives a strength to discover a different meaning of beauty. There is so much truth in the saying "bald is beautiful" Bald is not just a outward beauty, but an inward beauty; a beautiful display of strength, and confidence. Being bald sets us apart from the standards of society, and that is ok. Being unique is so much better then going along with everyone else. The stares we get, the comments people make only make us stand out more, it shows people that it is ok to not add up to the standards of society, it is ok to be "different" when in reality we are not different at all, we are unique, we are fighters and we have a strength that the normal's of society could never understand, nor achieve. We are special, Alopecia doesn't define me, and it doesn't control me but it molds me into someone fierce, and ready for battle, someone who can understand that true beauty comes from the inside. Alopecia, does not define me, nor does it control me, it makes me beautiful in a whole new way, it redefines the definition of beauty and brings my soul peace, knowing I have been humbled through my experience. Think about it, what it is not what does alopecia do to us, but what does alopecia do for us? How does alopecia make us beautiful? Beauty by definition : the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit , or a particularly graceful, ornamental, or excellent quality. Beauty does not have to be long blonde hair, tan skin, or perfect eyebrows, for that type of beauty is only skin deep. Beauty is who are on the inside, and how we embrace who we are on the inside and out. Our battle with alopecia can have much more beautiful, longer lasting impact on others than our visual beauty alone. No matter what we are facing, we have to remember it only controls us as much as we allow it to, and that we are not defined by outward beauty but by who we are on the inside. Do not let your situation define you, nor control you. Do not let Alopecia rob you blind of your self worth, and beauty. You are a warrior, a fighter, and your battle can impact the world, so be an overcomer.
Tips to redefining your self worth/beauty:
1. Take control of your battle, stop letting it control you
2. Find the good qualities and exemplify them
3. Embrace the difference and use it to impact others.
4. Remind yourself: difference isn't a bad thing, its being unique that allows you to stand out and grab the attention of others. Your making a greater impact and portraying a greater message than you realize, so let your strength speak volumes.
5. Always allow for the down days, take time to be sad, and have down thoughts, but do not let them keep you down, use these days as motivators.
6. Alopecia, is a journey embrace it, accept it, and love yourself , for you are amazing, beautiful and a warrior!
7. Fight the battle, do not let it fight you, stand up against the fight and take it one day, one step at a time.
Alopecia, is not easy, and once we realize its a fight, but that its also a journey, a beautiful journey, we can allow ourselves to embrace it and to let it define our true beauty. Alopecia you don't define me but you do mold me into something more, something greater, something beautiful. Take hold of this journey, explore the battle, gain understanding, and fight, fight, fight. You are beautiful, and you can overcome.
